Alarm Ordinance 2375 FAQ

  1. Why was the new ordinance established?
    • This permitting program allows the Los Gatos Police Department to recover costs and continue providing full-service responses to alarm activations. Alarm registration also ensures the Police Department has vital contact information in the event of an alarm at your residence or business.

  1. Who is required to have a residential alarm permit?
    • Anyone who has an alarm system for their home.  Including
      1. Self-Monitored (i.e. Ring, Google Cam, etc.)
      2. Monitored by third party (i.e. ADT, Bay Alarm, etc.)
      3. Not Monitored
  1. Do I need to register my surveillance cameras?
    • No, you do not need to register your video cameras.

  1. How do I register my residential alarm system?
  1. What is the cost to register or renew my alarm permit?
    • The cost to register your alarm is $95 per year               
  1. What are the fines associated with a false alarm?
    • Ordinance 2375 allows for one free false alarm within a designated 6-month period.
      1. January – June and July – December
    • You will start accumulating false alarm fines on the second false alarm.
    • Fines for false alarms are currently $175 per false alarm
  1. How will I be contacted if I incur a false alarm response?
    • You will receive a notification via mail           
  1. What is the definition of a false alarm?
    • Section 14.50.015 of the Los Gatos Town Code defines a false alarm as

An Activation of a police alarm system, to which personnel of the Police Department respond, in circumstances where no Police emergency exists; provided, that such activation shall not be deemed a false alarm if the owner thereof establishes, by a preponderance of evidence, that the alarm was activated by matters entirely beyond the owner's control, including but not limited to acts of God or utility failures.

  1. Can I appeal a false alarm activation notice or fee?
  1. How can I pay my false alarm fine?
  1. How can I transfer my alarm permit to another address within Los Gatos?
    • No.  If you move, you must register again and pay a new fee of $95.  
    • Registration fee is per calendar year, and not prorated
    • If you moved into a new residence within Los Gatos and it has an existing alarm, you will still need to register the new address and alarm system at your new address.
