Introduction to Historic Preservation

Historic places help us understand and remember where we have been and plan where we should be in the future. To this end, preservation is a valuable planning tool which can increase property values, promote and revitalize urban cores, and foster a sense of community pride. Los Gatos, the Gem of the Foothills, is a community filled with quaint historic neighborhoods and a vibrant historic downtown. Preservation of these resources is evidenced by the ongoing efforts of long time residents and newcomers. Recognizing the value of Los Gatos’ historic resources, the Town Council adopted a Landmark Historic Preservation Ordinance and created the town’s Historic Preservation Committee. Los Gatos’ on-going support of preservation planning is also expressed in the town’s General Plan.

The Historic Preservation Committee advises the Planning Commission, the Development Review Committee, and the Director of Community Development concerning the historic preservation of residential and commercial structures. The committee may approve minor residential alterations to historic structures as permitted by the Town Code.  Enabling Resolution

The committee consists of 5 members, including 2 Planning Commission members and 3 members of the public appointed by the Town Council. Committee members are professional and lay persons with demonstrated interest, competence, or knowledge in historic preservation.

Meetings

Historic Preservation Committee meets every 4th Wednesday of each month in the Town Council Chambers, at 4 p.m. For dates, select the Events Calendar. Filing deadline is 3 Wednesdays prior to the meeting date, or 20 days, by 11:00 a.m.

How Can I Get Involved?

All meetings are open to the public. We invite you to attend a meeting before you apply. Contact the Community Development Department at 408-354-6874 to confirm meeting date, location, and time.
