Blossom Hill Road Update

Town staff has been actively encouraging Caltrans to pursue an expedited plan for the repairs to the Blossom Hill Road overpass.   The biggest element associated with this is the engineered design of the repair, which is complicated by utilities within the bridge structure.  Caltrans expects this design to be fully complete early next week.  Concurrently, Caltrans has completed an agreement with a contractor to do the work.  Town staff and Caltrans met with the contractor this week to review the project.  At its current stage, the design includes installing a temporary steel structure on the top of the bridge (on Blossom Hill Road) to allow for lifting the bridge off of the damaged girder.  This will be followed by repairs to the steel and concrete on the underside of the bridge.  The construction work will occur at night to decrease the impacts on traffic.  During construction hours, southbound Highway 17 will need to be detoured to local streets at Lark Avenue.  As this closure will occur at night, no significant impact is expected on local streets.
Town staff explored the opportunity for changing the traffic flow on Blossom Hill Road to allow for some version of two way traffic.  Unfortunately the amount of space necessary to do the work does not allow for this while maintaining safe passage for vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians.  Other traffic control ideas were also considered and are included in the FAQs linked here:
Town staff provided heavy emphasis on the importance of the schedule on this project in meeting with Caltrans and the contractor.  More information will be available once the final design is complete, however the Town is planning on the closure being in place through the end of November.  We continue to experience heavy traffic on Lark Avenue and Highway 9, especially around the evening commute times. Please allow yourself some extra time or avoid cross town drives during the busy time.
The Town will coordinate updates on a weekly basis or as information becomes available.

The public is invited to an informational meeting on the project.  The Town’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) and Town staff will discuss the safety benefits of the improvements and listen to your feedback.

Lifesaving Information For Emergencies (L.I.F.E.) File

Emergencies can happen when we least expect them to and many of the requests for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) happen within the home. The Town of Los Gatos is partnering with the Santa Clara County Fire Department to promote their new L.I.F.E. file program. The L.I.F.E. File is a simple tool individuals and families may use to assist emergency responders during a medical emergency.   First Responders rely heavily upon the patient, and/or the patient’s family members, to provide information used to help in the treatment and care of the patient. However, there are times when the patient is unable to provide this information and family members may not be present or available to assist First Responders during a medical emergency. The L.I.F.E. File information includes past pertinent medical history, allergies to medications, medications currently prescribed to the patient, advanced medical directives and any additional information. The L.I.F.E. File pouch is a vinyl magnetic pouch that is placed in an easily seen location on the front or side of the refrigerator.

You may pick up L.I.F.E. Files from Town Hall and local fire stations. If you, or anyone you know, would like additional information on the L.I.F.E. File program please contact Jackie Rose, Community Outreach Coordinator at

Volunteers sought for Bike Valet at Local Events

The Los Gatos Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission is supporting free Bike Valet parking at local events, building on the success of the Red, White and Blue block party, where we parked over 100 bikes, so we are ready with plenty of space and racks. Volunteering to park bikes is a ton of fun! You can sign up with some friends and make a date of it and high school students can even receive community service hours. Cyclists arriving at the event are always happy to see you and fun to talk to. Typically volunteers are needed for 2-hour shifts with each shift led by an experienced commissioner. If you would like to help out, please contact Maria Ristow, to become a part of this amazing volunteer team. Help us take more cars off the road and make it easy for people to bike downtown.
