California Daylighting Law Flyer

California's New Daylighting Law (AB413)

Have you heard about California’s new Daylighting law?

Beginning in 2025, new parking restrictions will go into effect across the state prohibiting parking within 20 feet of the approach side of any marked or unmarked crosswalk, even if the space does not have a red curb!

This new law aims to improve pedestrian safety by enhancing the visibility for both pedestrians and drivers by removing visual obstructions (vehicles) from the approach side of marked and unmarked crosswalks.

The Town of Los Gatos will start marking parking spaces red in areas with high pedestrian traffic, including the downtown, near parks, schools, and senior communities to increase awareness of the new parking restrictions.

Make sure to leave 20 feet (about the length of a large car) between your vehicle and any crosswalk, as a violation or warning can be issued even if there are no red curbs or markings present.

Let’s help keep our streets safe together! If you have questions, reach out to the Town’s Parks and Public Works department at (408) 399-5770 or ppw@losgatosca.gov for more information.

Santa Clara County Fire Department Wildfire Safety Information

Following the Southern California wildfires, communities across the state are rightfully concerned and have questions about their fire risk, how to prepare for potential wildfires, and how their fire service providers are mitigating risk and preparing for the same.

In response, the Santa Clara County Fire Department has prepared a Wildfire Safety Information Sheet.

Age Friendly Survey Flyer

Age Friendly Community Survey

The Town has partnered with Santa Clara County to gather data for Los Gatos as part of the Town's commitment in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities!

You are invited to complete the Age-Friendly Community Survey to help us better understand residents’ needs in areas such as housing, transportation, health care, and social inclusion.

Your opinions will help inform Los Gatos and guide Santa Clara County efforts to develop a community-wide action plan to become more age-friendly over the next five years.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and have your voice heard. Feel free to share the survey with family; friends; and any community, faith, or affinity groups. Your input and help sharing is crucial to the inclusion of diverse viewpoints.

Community listening sessions will follow in 2025 and will be announced through the Age-Friendly newsletter (you can sign up at agefriendlysiliconvalley.org).

Respondents should be 45 or older and a resident of Santa Clara County. The survey answers are confidential. Please allow 20 minutes to complete.

Community Police Academy

The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department’s Community Police Academy is now accepting applications for the upcoming academy.

The academy runs from March 6 to April 24, 2025.

The third annual Community Police Academy is about to kick off and we want to see YOU in the class! This is a great opportunity for local community members to participate in an informative eight-week program designed to give an inside look at law enforcement. During the academy, students will be introduced to a wide range of topics designed to provide participants with an overview of the Department's function and operational procedures. A primary goal of the academy is to increase understanding between Los Gatos residents and the Police Department, and to enhance relationships within the community. Topics include patrol operations, laws of arrest, investigations, records processing, traffic laws, communications, defensive tactics, and much more. The classes will be taught by LGMSPD personnel and other community partner collaborators. The course takes place over eight weeks and consists of a three-hour class, once a week on Thursdays, for the duration of the course. This is a great way to get to know the men and women of the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department and gain a better understanding of the role of Police in the community.

If you are interested in joining, apply today at www.losgatosca.gov/2261/Community-Policing.

trail construction

Trail Construction on Los Gatos Creek Trail at HWY 9

Construction along the Los Gatos Creek Trail near Highway 9, as part of the Town’s Los Gatos Creek Trailhead Connector to Highway 9 Project, continues. The prefabricated bridge structure has been placed over Los Gatos Creek.

The bridge is not currently open for public use as the contractor will continue construction on the bridge approach and deck. Work is also continuing on the north side of Highway 9 to complete that access.

The trail still generally remains open during construction, but there may be occasional short delays to ensure safe access. Trail users continue to be advised to exercise caution and anticipate potential delays when traveling through the construction area.

Santa Clara County 988 Crisis Line

County of Santa Clara Launches

988 Phone Number Dedicated to

Crisis Mental Health Services

Santa Clara County has launched a lifeline phone number for people to call in times of mental health or substance use crisis, with teams of trained counselors available 24/7 to offer support by phone or in-person, depending on the nature of the situation.

The lifeline – reached by dialing 9-8-8 – is the result of a push to make similar crisis and suicide prevention services available across the country starting July 16, 2022. The County of Santa Clara’s 988 operation includes an array of mental health services designed to de-escalate crisis situations.

The County’s new lifeline is designed to provide support for those experiencing emotional or mental health distress, including thoughts of suicide, fearfulness, or other mental health or substance use crises. Loved ones and others can also call 988 if they are concerned for someone else.

The lifeline will also serve as a connection point for County Behavioral Health Services and community-based organizations. The various onsite mobile response teams are made up of crisis clinicians and peer outreach specialists; services that both involve or do not involve law enforcement are available. The goals of 988 are de-escalation, stabilization, and referral to continued services.

County Behavioral Health Services staff are thoroughly trained on the new system, and the 988 line went live in a soft launch in May. The service is free, anonymous, and confidential, with no information shared unless in-person dispatch is required. Language interpretation is available in more than 200 languages. Calls to 988 are routed by area code; if the phone used does not have a 408, 650 or 669 area code, the Santa Clara County service can be accessed by calling 1-800-704-0900 and pressing 1. The same 800 number can be used for non-emergency calls to County Behavioral Health Services regarding general mental health and substance use treatment services information and referrals.

Lifesaving Information For Emergencies (L.I.F.E.) File

Emergencies can happen when we least expect them to and many of the requests for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) happen within the home. The Town of Los Gatos is partnering with the Santa Clara County Fire Department to promote their new L.I.F.E. file program. The L.I.F.E. File is a simple tool individuals and families may use to assist emergency responders during a medical emergency. First Responders rely heavily upon the patient, and/or the patient’s family members, to provide information used to help in the treatment and care of the patient. However, there are times when the patient is unable to provide this information and family members may not be present or available to assist First Responders during a medical emergency. The L.I.F.E. File information includes past pertinent medical history, allergies to medications, medications currently prescribed to the patient, advanced medical directives and any additional information. The L.I.F.E. File pouch is a vinyl magnetic pouch that is placed in an easily seen location on the front or side of the refrigerator.

You may pick up L.I.F.E. Files from the Los Gatos Monte Sereno Police Department and local fire stations. If you, or anyone you know, would like additional information on the L.I.F.E. File program please contact Jackie Rose, Community Outreach Coordinator at
JRose@losgatosca.gov.
