Practical steps to prepare early for El Niño

With climatologists predicting a strong El Niño this winter, the Town of Los Gatos encourages residents to take steps now to prepare for winter storms.

Here's what you can do now to prepare for a wet winter:

  • Prepare your home: keep ditches, gutters and other water collection ways clear of leaves and debris.
  • Keep trees properly trimmed.
  • Maintain your home's roof and repair any leaks or damage now before the rains come.
  • Check your vehicle's windshield wipers to make sure they are working properly.
  • Ensure proper tire maintenance for your vehicle(s).
  • There may be power outages so store up plenty of flashlight batteries.
  • Have an emergency kit ready.
  • If you're a pet owner, ID your pets. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar and identification tag that includes your current address and phone number. You can also have your pet micro-chipped.

Self-fill sand bags will be available at the parking lot near Balzer Field located at 41 Miles Avenue by November 30, 2015.
