Businesses

Many types of businesses have come and gone in Los Gatos' history.  The photos below represent some of these different businesses.

Forbes Mill
Forbes Mill was constructed in 1854 by James Alexander Forbes.  This was the first commercial building in Los Gatos.

LG Manufacturing
Forbes Mill changed hands and became the Los Gatos Manufacturing Company in 1870.  Producing flour, the Los Gatos Manufacturing Company operated until 1887.  It was then purchased by the Los Gatos Ice and Power Company and the Los Gatos Gas Company.  The building was purchased by PG&E in 1912.  The storage annex of this building still exists today.  It is now the history Museum of Los Gatos.

LG Market
Pictured here in 1880, the Los Gatos Market stood on Santa Cruz Avenue, near Main Street.

1890 SC & Main
This photo shows Santa Cruz Avenue and Main St. during a celebration in 1890.  The buildings on the left feature business names.

1895 Bank of LG
The Bank of Los Gatos was incorporated in 1883.  This photo of the bank building was taken in 1895.

1906 Briggs Grocery
In 1906, the Los Gatos Cash Grocery Store was owned by F.E Briggs.

1907 Gem City Auto Repair
In 1907, the Gem City Garage stood on West Main St. near the Lyndon Hotel.  In 1914, the Mercury News advertised Gem City Garage as "one of the oldest established largest and best-known garages in the valley..."

1908 Chase Stationery
E.L. Chase's Stationery and Music Store was located next to the Los Gatos Cash Grocery Store.  It sold postcards, writing utensils, sheet music, phonographs and records.  This photo was taken in 1908.

1910 Cralls Bookstore
In 1910, H.J. Crall stood in the center of his bookstore.  He sold books & postcards.  He even had a "loan library" where people could rent books for 10 cents per week.

20th Century Tea Store 1915

The 20th Century Tea Store was located on the first floor of the Ford Opera House, and owned by H.C. Baumgardner from 1913-1919.  Baumgardner was the first telephone operator in Los Gatos.

1915 First National
In 1915, the First National Bank and Nuss & Hays Hardware stood at 160 West Main Street.

1920 Cushing White Blacksmith
In 1920, Cushing and White Blacksmithing stood on Santa Cruz Avenue.

1920 LG Auto Supply
In 1920, several automobile businesses lined North Santa Cruz Avenue.  The Los Gatos Auto Supply Company was located at 122 North Santa Cruz Avenue.

1920 Strand Theater
The Strand Theater was constructed in 1916.  This building burned down in 1929 and reopened later as the Premier Theater.

1930 Greens Drugs
Green's Drug Store opened in 1904 and moved to this location at 11 East Main Street in 1910.  This business lasted more than 40 years.  George A. Green served on the town council, the first planning commission and as mayor of the Town of Los Gatos.

1935 LG Creamery
In 1930, the Los Gatos Creamery was located at 46 North Santa Cruz Avenue.

1937 LG Times
This photo shows the Los Gatos Times building as it looked in 1937.  This building was located at 50 West Main Street.

1950 5 Spot Drive-In
In 1950, the 5 Spot Drive-In was located on the corner of North Santa Cruz and Saratoga Avenues.

This 1958 Mobil Oil station was located on the corner of North Santa Cruz Avenue and Nicholson.
