Cooling Stations Opened to the Community to Combat Extreme Heat

The Town of Los Gatos has opened two cooling stations to the community to ensure that Los Gatos residents have a safe place to stay during this week’s expected high temperatures.

Residents, especially senior citizens, are strongly advised to take advantage of cooling stations if needed. Cooling stations are air-conditioned facilities where residents can find relief from the heat.

Los Gatos cooling stations are located at:

Los Gatos Adult Recreation Center
208 E. Main Street
8:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. Wednesday thru Friday

Los Gatos Library
100 Villa Avenue
10:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. Wednesday thru Friday
10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Saturday
12:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. Sunday

Here are a few tips from Red Cross to stay cool:
  • Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
  • Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you do not feel thirsty.  Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.  Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Postpone outdoor games and activities.
  • Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.  Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
  • Those who work outside in the heat should also take special precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses by periodically getting out of the heat and staying hydrated, especially when they start to feel hot.
